According to a statement issued Friday, Feb. 28 by the Vatican, the 88-year-old pontiff experienced an “isolated” breathing crisis that has raised concerns about his condition.
After a morning spent alternating between respiratory physiotherapy and prayer in the chapel, the Holy Father suffered a sudden deterioration following an episode of bronchospasm in the afternoon, the statement said, noting that the incident led to vomiting, which resulted in further complications.
Pope Francis was quickly subjected to bronchial aspiration to clear his airways. He was also placed on non-invasive mechanical ventilation, which improved his oxygen levels.
The Vatican’s announcement emphasized that despite the recent crisis, Pope Francis has remained alert and aware, actively cooperating with therapeutic treatments.
The prognosis remains guarded, with medical staff indicating that approximately 24 to 48 hours will be necessary to assess the Pope’s clinical condition following this isolated bronchospasm episode.
He was admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome on Friday, Feb. 14, following an infection of the respiratory tract.
